Get-your-schnapps-here ! (Crappy Cardboard Photobooth 'Schnappy Schapps' splurged out hand-drawn "photos" for queing clubbers in Club Maria in Berlin, as part of Transmediale Festival 2008. The derogative term "Schnapps" actually alluded to 'photo snaps', though this still left a queue of german clubbers queing up in hope of receiving free booze (schnapps= alcohol in german).By Tintin Cooper & Boo Saville.
In January 2008 the London-based art collective !wowow!, looking more like a bunch escaped convicts/refugees rather than the group of intellectual artists/performers/DJs/writers that they really are, boarded a plane to Berlin to take part in Club Transmediale under the fitting theme....."UNPREDICTABLE".
Impromptu robot danceMe and artist Boo Saville spontaneously decided to make a cardboard photobooth for the unsuspecting. Following a set of simple, germanic-style commands (ie- 1) comb your hair 2) wait your turn 3) sit down...etc) the person sat down and pulled the paper curtain across, all the while a big googly eye stared out greedily.
Ta-dah! After only a minute's wait, delighted sitters showed off their truer-than-life portraits.
For a good hour or two happy clubbers queued up, eagerly awaiting their very own hand-drawn masterpiece. That is, until a pale-looking Kraut with black boots and a shaved head decided to trash the whole thing.
